The board
The 2026 Hyperlite Shim Jr. 3.9 is shaped by Butch Customs as a youth-scaled crossover board that genuinely delivers both skim and surf style riding — not as a compromise, but as a deliberate design feature. The 3’9” compact profile keeps swing weight low for faster rotations, while the fast rocker line carries speed across the curl so the board never goes flat between tricks. Built on Hyperlite’s DuraShell construction over an EPS core, the Shim Jr. is buoyant and durable enough for everyday use without the fragility of higher-end constructions. The diamond tail with vented channels releases cleanly into spins and provides control through surf-style turns, and the single concave base channels water for responsiveness and drive. The real headline is the fin setup: run all three fins and the Shim Jr. locks into the wave with genuine surf-style hold for carving and bottom turns. Pull the two side Torq fins out, run just the 1.5” Fish centre fin, and it breaks free into a loose, skatey skim feel ready for spins and surface tricks. Two boards in one for a young rider still figuring out which style they love on Kalamalka Lake.
Shim Jr. vs. Good Daze Jr. — which one?
Shim Jr.
The crossover specialist. Explicitly designed around the fin-swap: run all three for surf hold, pull the side fins for skim looseness. Best for riders who want to explore both styles without committing to one board for each.
Good Daze Jr.
Same compact shape and DuraShell build, but the Satin Flex layered glass gives it a more forgiving, progressive feel underfoot. Better fit for riders who are still developing their trick foundation and want a slightly more forgiving response.
What makes it work
Configurable Fins — Surf or Skim
The board’s entire character changes with a fin swap. Three fins in: the two 3.5” Torq side fins lock the board onto the wave rail for driven surf-style carving. Side fins out: running just the 1.5” Fish centre fin turns the Shim Jr. into a loose, free skim board ready for spins and surface tricks. No tools needed — swap on the swim platform in seconds.
Fast Rocker + Compact 3’9” Length
The fast rocker keeps the board carrying speed all the way through the curl without dropping off, while the compact length reduces swing weight for quicker rotations. A shorter board means less physical effort to initiate a spin — which matters a lot when a younger rider is building the muscle memory for new tricks on Okanagan Lake.
Diamond Tail + Single Concave Base
The mid-profile diamond tail with vented channels releases cleanly for spins and delivers control through turns in either fin setup. The single concave base channels water for extra responsiveness and drive — the board feels lively underfoot rather than flat, which keeps younger riders engaged and progressing.
DuraShell EPS — Buoyant & Durable
DuraShell combines the buoyancy of a high-end EPS board with the toughness of compression moulding — it resists heel dents and handles the daily knocks of boat life without showing it. Please note that most board's have a 50lbs sweet spot, so 90 - 140 lbs for this model. If your child is just starting out, the Phase Five Scamp is a better starting point. If they’re ready to step up to a full-size board, the Hyperlite Hi-Fi runs the same crossover concept in adult sizing.
